What graphic novels/manga can you recommend for a third grader who's read all the Star Wars comics?
I have a friend who's son is eight years old. He's a Star Wars fanatic, and has now voiced an interest in writing/drawing comics. He's gone through all the film adaptations of Star Wars. My friend knows I'm interested in graphic novels, but my tastes run towards DC's Vertigo line...and I'm not interested in scarring the kid for life.
Anyway, here's the catch: my friend says her son doesn't like super hero comics.
So--does anyone have any age appropriate (8-10) suggestions for graphic novels that don't involve super heroes. Maybe something with a s/f background?
You can never go wrong with the Big 3 in manga:

There is minimal violence (enough to keep the series interesting), along with fairly compelling story lines and unique worlds. You can take a look at them to judge if they are appropriate.

These are just some of types of migraines that many people suffer from. A simple way to differentiate a classical from common migraine is to note the presence of an aura. An aura is a warning approach of a migraine usually in form of bright lights, distorted figures or shapes, blind spots or stars. Other patients usually report a strange smell or some tingling sensation in arms and legs. When you experience an aura 20-30 minutes before an attack this kind of migraine is called a classical migraine.
A common migraine on the other hand has the same symptoms as the classic migraine however the distinguishing factor is the absence on an aura. Many people are usually diagnosed with a common migraine, although it is easier to treat migraine with an aura since it is predictable. A chronic migraine does not threaten some one's life; its symptoms tend to interfere with your daily chores. Both classical and common types of migraine present with the same symptoms which include intolerance to sound, light, unusual pain, vomiting and nausea.
Another migraine type is the menstrual kind of migraine. This migraine is usually caused by an imbalance in hormone and is only present during the menstrual period. You will experience the same symptoms as the classic and common types. To treat this, doctors can prescribe oral contraceptives, estrogen tablets or patches. A hemiplegic kind of migraine usually affects persons with paralysis on one side the body. When you experience this headache you notice symptoms of vertigo. About 10 to 90 minutes before the hemiplegic migraine you will experience a feeling of the world spinning around. Other people usually experience pain around the eyes; this kind of migraine is called the ophthalmologic migraine. Patients with this condition usually have drooping eye lids and double vision. Basilar artery migraine affects the artery located at the base of the brain. Before the headache starts you will experience poor muscular coordination, vertigo and double vision. This condition affects young adults' women and adolescents usually around menstruation time.
Another type of migraine is benign exertional headache caused by running, coughing, sneezing, lifting or bending. With this migraine the pain starts once you exert some energy and is relieved in a few minutes. One rare yet severe kind of migraine is the status migrainosus. Patients with this condition have severe pain lasting for more than 72 hours and are usually hospitalized. Neurologists believe that his condition is triggered by certain medications. Most patients who experience this kind of migraine are usually stressed or anxious prior to the attacks. The other type of migraine is the headache free migraine. The symptoms include vomiting, nausea, constipation and diarrhea. People with this headache, are able to run their errands while taking medications to control the few symptoms. This kind of migraine is easier to handle and does not hinder your work.
