How To Read Digital Comic Books on iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone

The iPad is perfect for reading your digital comics. It beats out the Kindle and other ebook readers because, unless you're reading a graphic novel in B & W, then you want to see your comics in color. Duh!

You have lots of choices for downloading comic books to your iPad. You can download them individually or you can get a subscription to one of the comic book publishers like Marvel Comics for .99 a month or .88 for a year's subscription. The drawback with this type of membership is it locks you into just Marvel comics and you probably want to also read manga and graphic novels.

Another way to go is to buy your comics through the Kindle store, or Barne's and Noble Nook, or the iTunes store. If you go that route you'll need to get the App for those stores for you iPad.

However we've also found two membership sites, that for less than the price of the Marvel membership let you download unlimited books, magazines, comics and newspapers.

One of these sites is My Pad Media a membership site that offers fast downloads for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. They offer unlimited downloads of comics, books, magazines, newspapers and other media with no download fees. They also include 24/7 technical support for their members. My Pad Media has been in business for awhile so they have a pretty huge selection and growing all the time. The other membership site is Pad Bro. It offers a similar membership and offers the unlimited books, magazines, comics and newspapers. It seems very similar to My Pad Media and also offers the 60 full refund if you don't like the membership. This membership costs and is also for a lifetime membership! If you sign up with Pad Bro right now they're also including a bonus gift of IPTuber, which allows you to watch TV programs on your computer.

Both of these membership sites also support downloads for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad! Sounds worth checking out.

What do you usually do with your old comic books when you are done reading them? Many of us usually just leave them lying around to wither into old age and then we probably trash it. Other people will probably return them into their original paper seal and keep them stored as collectables and probably sell them later when they are worth more than they are now. If you sell comic books you would be surprised at how much money and demand that is out there.

Most people who sell comic books know the value that comes from owning old comic books, having been maintained like an old vintage car. What you need to do with the comic is put into a clear plastic sleeve, or you can even sell it to someone who is interested. The comic books that sell the most are usually the first series kind and they usually go for a lot of money compared to the new ones that is why you will find that it is collectors who buy such comics. The hard covered comic’s books also have value.

There are also places where you can go and see these comic books, especially at the conventions they usually have people bringing their comic books and showing them to everyone as well as some people selling them. The internet is another good place to find people that are willing to sell comic books or if you are looking for rare comics you can try an auction where you can look for the comic you want. Be sure to leave your comic in good condition and makes sure it’s in mint condition if you intend to sell it one day.

Rare and Valuable Comic Books

The average price of a comic book ranges from .00 to .99. However, over time their value can increase tenfold. Comic are becoming more popular as each year passes and people are buying more comics each time they go to a comic book store. The demand for comics is making them a hot commodity, and rare comics are becoming very valuable. Comic enthusiasts are paying top dollar for first edition and rare comics that date back to as late as the 1950’s.

In Dallas, Texas, at the Heritage Auction Galleries, two very rare and valuable comics are going up for auction. The two comics being auctioned off are Batman #1 and Marvel Mystery Comics #9. A man who has been collecting comics since he was a young kid is auctioning them off, and they are expected to bring in up to 0,000 profit for both.

The first issue of Batman comics, Batman #1, came out in the spring of 1940. It became so popular that the Batman series which originally was supposed to be published quarterly, turned into a bi-monthly production in the 1950’s. It then became a monthly series and has stayed that way. Batman, the character, first appeared in another series of comic books called the Detective Comics in issue #27. The Batman series is still being published today and the latest issue is #686.

Marvel Mystery comic books series started production in the 1930’s. Marvel Mystery Comics #9 is about the Human Torch versus the Sub-Mariner. The Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner are two of the most popular comic’s character during the Golden Age of Comic books. The Sub-Mariner was considered to be Marvel comic’s first mutant character because he is a mix of the human species and the Atlanteans. He lives on both land and sea and has superhuman strength. The Human Torch can engulf his entire body on fire and can also fly.

What makes comic books valuable are the characters. During the Golden Age of Comics, these three characters were some of the most popular. The issue number, seen as # on the comic, also raises value of the comic. Batman #1 is so valuable because it’s his first appearance in his own series. The Batman character had been introduced in different series and gained popularity among readers, which is why his series was created. Marvel Mystery Comics #9 is valuable because something important happened. It was the dual between two well known comic characters. There are different factors that make a comic book valuable, and these two comic books have it.

I have seen multiple copies of the same comic book where one will simply have the issue number -- no price, no month, no cc, no "approved by the comics code authority", just a number.
What does this mean?
The books in reference were some old issues of the Incredible Hulk.

It's Easy to buy Comic Books Online

Back in the good old days, if a kid had a quarter in his pocket he would jump on his skateboard or Schwinn Stingray bicycle and head as fast as he could to the five-and-dime and pick up the newest copy of Spiderman or my favorite, Journey into Mystery featuring the Mighty Thor. These great Marvel Silver Age comics are now worth thousands of dollars and it all started with some kid and his quarter. Now if you want to buy comic books you need to either find an actual comic book store, which are becoming more and more rare every passing month, or you can buy comic books online.

When you buy comic books online you definitely will save some time but you lose the ability to actually hold the comic book in your hands like when you go to the actual store. Personally I like to be able to saunter into a comic book store and walk around, check out the expensive mags on the wall displays, and delve deeply into their back issue files.

About fifteen years ago I started going to comic book stores with my son and we would buy his favorite titles, usually Superman, and while he was looking at the newer titles I would search in the back issue files and find rare gems. After a couple of years of doing this I ended up with quite the collection of Silver Age Marvel comics. I bought a lot of Thor comics, but others also, including lots of X-men and Fantastic Four. Some of these comics were not in very good condition, but I bought them anyway with the reasoning that they were not making these anymore and someday they would be worth something just for being rare. I now have a pretty nice collection that is worth quite a bit of moolah.

If you want to buy comic books online there are several good websites you can go on. Ebay has an extensive ongoing rotation of great comics for sale, including many that have received the CGC (comic guarantee company) certification and are enclosed in hard plastic. You can search through their extensive database and find rare comics and graphic novels as well as newer titles. You can bid on any comics you find there and sometimes you can pick up some pretty good bargains or rare gems. Most of the time though you end up paying more than you intended or someone else beats you in the final auction bidding.

One of the best places to buy comic books online is at www.midtowncomics.com. Here you will find all of the best titles available from Silver Age to today's mangas. Another great site is www.atomicavenue.com and you can search their extensive database. You can also sell comics as well as buy comic books online there.

With the massive worldwide popularity of comic book and movie superheroes such as Spiderman, Iron Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, and of course, the X-men, comic book prices will continue to rise, especially older, harder to find titles.

Drawing Comic Books and Graphic Novels for a Living

What artistically inclined kid has not dreamed of one day drawing comic books for a living? To be able to sell your doodling and make a great living seems too good to be true. Imagine finishing your first comic book for Marvel or DC and becoming an international sensation. You can then go back to your grammar school teachers and wave the comics in their face while lighting your cigar with a 0 bill.

Comic books are worth tons of money these days and all the movies and animations that they have spawned make billions of dollars worldwide. Spiderman, X-Men, Wolverine, Superman, Batman and Robin, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, and Iron Man are just some of the big name comic heroes that have graduated from the pulp pages to the big screen with enormous success.

One of the first great comic book movies was Superman starring the late Christopher Reeves. This movie had a gigantic impact because it was the first real movie to use those types of special effects that later became common. It came out right around the same time as Star Wars and featured our hero flying in a very realistic way. Prior to that incarnation on the big screen the only super heroes we saw on film or TV was the old Batman and Robin series from the sixties. This was pretty schlocky and had miserably poor effects but yet was wildly popular in its heyday. It is strange that it took Hollywood so long to realize that they were sitting on a gold mine with comic book titles.

Stan Lee started Marvel Comics Group and turned it into a juggernaut in the sixties with creations such as Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. This was the Silver Age of comics and featured some of the best artists and writers in the business. Drawing comic books became an art form when Jack Kirby (Thor, Fantastic Four) decided to lift his pencil for the first time. He and fellow Marvel artists such as John Romita (Spiderman) and John Buscema (Spiderman) took drawing comic books to another level of artistry. For the fist time in history comic books were considered modern and pop art masterpieces.

Drawing comic books really came into a new phase with great artists such as Barry Smith who exploded onto the scene with the dynamic renditions of Conan the Barbarian. Many budding artists were inspired in the early days to make a career out of drawing comic books. Drawing comic books for a living is a great way to go if you have the talent and the ambition. There are several great schools where you can learn how to draw comics for a living including the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. There are wonderful books available on Amazon.com that will give you some training in how to draw comic books. So go ahead and make your dreams come true. You never know, one day you could be the inventor of the next Spiderman or Batman.

What to Do With Old Comic Books

Everyone at one time or another had those old comic books lying around. Either from childhood, or they belonged to your parents or even grandparents. Or perhaps they were given to you from someone close who wanted to get rid of theirs. Most of the time they're not worth much, just nice to have around for nostalgia's sake. Other times you can find a real gem that you could keep and hold dear, or sell that puppy on Ebay or to a local retailer.

Regardless of where they came from or what one intends to do with them, those old comic books bring back a lot of memories and can be hard to let go of. But sometimes it's necessary to do just that, either to lessen the clutter in your home, to make some quick cash, or to make room for more new ones! It's still hard to let go of all those memories and cool stories you enjoyed so many years ago, but it can be worth it.

How do you know if they're worth anything though? Well, if you're not a regular comic reader, it's a common misconception that they're all worth at least as much as their cover price, and if they're old they must be worth more. Sadly, that is almost never the case. Like anything else, comics depreciate with age, and with every tiny little crease they may have. They also lose value if the characters represented are no longer popular, or if the comics aren't old enough. In fact, anything 1970s and up is probably not going to be worth a lot unless it's a hot storyline, by a top creator, or features a first appearance by a very popular character.

One way you can find out if your old comic books are worth anything is to have them graded by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) which grades comics and places them in a plastic protective covering to further preserve them. They also give a seal and a document of authenticity and of course a rating. Graded comics generally sell for considerably larger amounts than the same comic in mint condition that is not graded. But grading comes at a price. For each comic you grade it cost you anywhere from to depending. While it will sell for more, it may still be hard to find a buyer, and you're cutting your profit by the cost of the grading.

Ebay is a great way of getting rid of old comic books as well. Everyone uses Ebay these days, and you can set reserve prices, or open it all the way up. You can sell single issues or collections. And you can describe your items in intricate detail for the potential buyers. Tons of comics are sold on Ebay every day.

You could also just give them away to Salvation Army, the local library, or some kid down the street if you wish. They're your comics, so do what you want with them. If you want to keep your old comic books around, but you want to protect them, go purchase some bags and boards from your local or favorite online comic shop and throw them in a box for storage. It's your call.

Investing in Comic Books

In a tough economy, we find ourselves looking to make a buck. We act like superheroes trying to fight this volatile economy. Well, why not look to the superheroes themselves? Comic books make for a great investment. They are lucrative and can be worth a lot of money. However, investing in comic books may not bring a big payoff right away. It can take fifteen to twenty years for a comic book to be valuable. Who would’ve thought that a childhood pastime would make you some money, and at the same time you get to have fun while purchasing comic books that bring some joy into your life.

Comic books are rising in value because of the increased popularity of them. Hollywood producers are making recognizable comic books heroes the stars of their movies. For people who are not familiar with the characters, they soon find themselves becoming more interested in them. Or people are reminded of characters they loved as a kid after seeing movies such as Ironman, Wonderwoman, and Superman. They are inspired to buy the comics after watching the movie.

Investing in comic books requires some work and dedication from the collector. They keep their value when they are in good condition and stored properly. There is also researched involved. How popular is the comic, what is the initial cost, what is the current value, how rare is the comic? You also have to decide what type of collector you want to be. There are different types of ways to be an investor for comics.

Investors simply care about the bottom line. They don’t have an emotional side attached with the comics and look to see how much money they can make from selling the comics. Another form of the investor is the person out to make some quick cash. This comic collector buys and sells in bulk tying to make fast money. Usually they are selling the most popular comics, not rarities. The EBay investor is closely related to the person trying to make some fast cash. They auction off their comic books on EBay. Usually they read the comics first and then sell them to get money back, but of course at a higher rate. Unlike the other investors they enjoy reading the comics and have some emotional attachment. Excitement not only comes from the comic but also the auctioning off of the book. Another type of investor simply looking at the bottom line is the inheritor. There is no sentimental value for the comics that were passed on to them. They want to get rid of the comics, but at the same time make a profit.

On the other hand, there are the emotional types of investors. To these types of people, there is sentimental value to the comics and they invest, trade, and purchase comics with value. The reader has the comics for their traditional purpose, reading. They don’t care about preserving the comic and enjoy the superheroes come to life as they read through the colorful pages of a comic. A step down from the reader is the part time reader. They enjoy comics but pick up and leave the hobby when it suits them. Last but not least, are the obsessive collectors. They dream, live, and breathe comic books. They categorize their comics, preserve the comics, and are the go-to guys for comic information.

Investing in comics has its rewards. Those rewards come in the form of money, joy, or excitement. Which collector are you and will you invest in comic books?

Silver Age of Comic Books

Origin of the term

Comics historian and movie producer Michael Uslan traces the origin of the "Silver Age" term to the letters column of Justice League of America #42 (Feb. 1966), which went on sale December 9, 1965. Letter-writer Scott Taylor of Westport, Connecticut wrote, "If you guys keep bringing back the heroes from the [1930s-1940s] Golden Age, people 20 years from now will be calling this decade the Silver Sixties!" According to Uslan, the natural hierarchy of gold-silver-bronze, as in Olympic medals, took hold. "Fans immediately glommed onto this, refining it more directly into a Silver Age version of the Golden Age. Very soon, it was in our vernacular, replacing such expressions as ... 'Second Heroic Age of Comics' or 'The Modern Age' of comics. It wasn't long before dealers were ... specifying it was a Golden Age comic for sale or a Silver Age comic for sale".

Superman, as depicted in a 1941 Fleischer Studios cartoon, was created during the Golden Age of Comic Books.

Spanning World War II, when comics provided cheap and disposable escapist entertainment that could be read and then discarded by the troops, the Golden Age of comic books covered the late 1930s to the late 1940s. A number of major superheroes were created during this period, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America. The brief so-called Atomic Age followed, between 1945 and 1956, but in subsequent years comics were blamed for a rise in juvenile crime statistics, although this rise was shown to be in direct proportion to population growth. When juvenile offenders admitted to reading comics, it was seized on as a common denominator; one notable critic was Fredric Wertham, author of the book Seduction of the Innocent (1954), who attempted to shift the blame for juvenile delinquency from the parents of the children to the comic books they read. The result was a decline in the comics industry. To address public concerns, in 1954 the Comics Code Authority was created to regulate and curb violence in comics, marking the start of a new era.

DC Comics

The Silver Age began with the publication of DC Comics's Showcase #4 (Oct. 1956), which introduced the modern version of the Flash. At the time, only three superheroesuperman, Batman, and Wonder Womanere still published under their own titles. According to DC comics writer Will Jacobs, Superman was available in "great quantity, but little quality." Batman was doing better, but his comics were "lackluster" in comparison to his earlier "atmospheric adventures" of the 1940s, and Wonder Woman, having lost her original writer and artist, was no longer "idiosyncratic" or "interesting." Jacobs describes the arrival of Showcase #4 on the newsstands as "begging to be bought"; the cover featured an undulating film strip depicting the Flash running so fast that he had escaped from the frame. Editor Julius Schwartz, writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino were behind the Flash's revitalization.

With the success of Showcase #4, several other 1940s superheroes were reworked during Schwartz's tenure, including Green Lantern, the Atom, and Hawkman, as well as the Justice League of America. The DC artists responsible included Murphy Anderson, Gil Kane and Joe Kubert. Only the characters' names remained the same; their costumes, locales, and identities were altered, and imaginative scientific explanations for their superpowers generally took the place of magic as a modus operandi in their stories. Schwartz, a lifelong science fiction fan, was the inspiration for the re-imagined Green Lanternhe Golden Age character, railroad engineer Alan Scott, possessed a ring powered by a magical lantern, but his Silver Age replacement, test pilot Hal Jordan, had a ring powered by an alien battery and created by an intergalactic police force.

In the mid-1960s, DC established that characters appearing in comics published prior to the Silver Age lived on a parallel Earth the company dubbed Earth-Two. Characters introduced in the Silver Age and onward lived on Earth-One. It was established that the two realities were separated by a vibrational field that could be crossed, should a storyline involve superheroes from different worlds teaming up.

Although the Flash is generally regarded as the first superhero of the Silver Age, the introduction of the Martian Manhunter in Detective Comics #225 predates Showcase #4 by almost a year, and some historians consider this character the first Silver Age superhero. However, comics historian Craig Shutt, author of the Comics Buyer's Guide column "Ask Mister Silver Age", disagrees. Shutt notes that when the Martian Manhunter debuted, he was a detective who used his alien abilities to solve crimes. Although he did ultimately become a charter member of the Justice League of America, originally he was just a "quirky detective", like other contemporaneous DC characters who were "TV detectives, Indian detectives, supernatural detectives, [and] animal detectives." Schutt feels the Martian Manhunter only became a superhero in Detective Comics #273 (Nov. 1959), when he received a secret identity and other superhero accoutrements. Said Schutt, "Had Flash not come along, I doubt that the Martian Manhunter would've led the charge from his backup position in Detective to a new super-hero age." Another hero that predates Showcase #4 is Captain Comet, who debuted in Strange Adventures #9 (June 1951). Comic Book Resources columnist Steven Grant considers him to be the first Silver Age superhero.

Marvel Comics

DC Comics sparked the superhero's revival with its publications from 1955 to 1960. Marvel Comics then capitalized on the revived interest in superhero storytelling with sophisticated stories and characterization. In contrast to previous eras, Silver Age characters were "flawed and self-doubting".

DC added to its momentum with its 1960 introduction of Justice League of America, a team consisting of the company's most popular superhero characters, Martin Goodman, a publishing trend-follower with his 1950s Atlas Comics line,note 1 directed his comic-book editor, Stan Lee, to create a series about a team of superheroes. Lee recalled in 1974 that "Martin mentioned that he had noticed one of the titles published by National Comics seemed to be selling better than most. It was a book called The [sic] Justice League of America and it was composed of a team of superheroes. ... ' If the Justice League is selling ', spoke he, ' why don't we put out a comic book that features a team of superheroes?'" Marvel Comics's Fantastic Four was the result.

Under the guidance of writer-editor Stan Lee and artists/co-plotters such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, Marvel began its own rise to prominence. Introducing dynamic plotting and more sophisticated characterization into superhero comics, Marvel began targeting teen and college-aged readers in addition to the children's market. Based on the success of The Fantastic Four, Lee and his artists created eleven new series over the next two-and-a-half years, with Spider-Man and, after a slow start, the Hulk among the most popular new characters. Other significant and enduring Marvel Silver Age heroes include Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, the X-Men, and Marvel's own all-star group, the Avengers. Captain America, a hero from the Golden Age, was revived in Avengers #4 (March 1964).

Comics historian Peter Sanderson compares the 1960s DC to a large Hollywood studio. Having reinvented the superhero genre, by the latter part of the decade he believes DC was suffering from a creative drought. The audience for comics was no longer just children, and Sanderson sees the 1960s Marvel as the comic equivalent of the French New Wave, developing new methods of storytelling that drew in and retained readers who were in their teens and older and thus influencing the comics writers and artists of the future. Comics historian Craig Shutt compares DC's and Marvel's differing styles: according to Schutt, DC heroes were straightforward in their dealings with each other, quickly banding together to defeat an enemy. In contrast Marvel's heroes trusted each other less, and would frequently oppose each other before resolving their differences and joining against a common foe. DC's approach settled conflicts between heroes without violence; Marvel's "addressed the age-old, little-kid question of which hero would win in a fight".

Other publishers

One of the top comics publishers in 1956, Harvey Comics discontinued its horror comics when the Comics Code was implemented and sought a new target audience. Harvey's focus shifted to children from 6 to 12 years of age, especially girls, with characters such as Richie Rich, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and Little Dot. Many of the company's comics featured young girls who "defied stereotypes and sent a message of acceptance of those who are different." Other publishers, such as Dell Comics and Gold Key Comics, made similar changes. Although its characters have inspired a number of nostalgic movies and ranges of merchandise, Harvey comics of the period are not as sought after in the collectors' market as DC and Marvel titles.

With the popularity of the Batman television show in 1966 publishers that had specialized in other forms began adding superhero titles to their lines. As well, new publishers sprang up, often using creative talent from the Golden Age. Harvey Comics released Double-Dare Adventures, starring new characters such as B-Man and Magic-Master. Dell Comics published superhero versions of Frankenstein, Dracula and the Werewolf. Gold Key Comics published licensed versions of television shows such as Captain Nice, Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles, and continued the adventures of Walt Disney Pictures' Goofy character in Supergoof. Charlton Comics published a short-lived superhero line with new characters that include Captain Atom, Judo-Master, the Question, and Thunderbolt. American Comics Group gave its established character Herbie a secret superhero identity as the Fat Fury, and introduced the characters of Nemesis and Magic-Man.Even the iconic Archie Comics teens acquired superpowers and superhero identities in comedic titles such as Archie as Pureheart the Powerful and Jughead as Captain Hero.

Archie Comics also launched its own standard, non-humorous superhero characters. The Archie Adventure line (subsequently titled Mighty Comics) included the Fly, the Jaguar, and the Shield, a revamped Golden Age hero. The success of the Avengers and the Justice League of America prompted Archie to create its own team title, The Mighty Crusaders, which saw the Comet and Flygirl join with three characters with their own titles.

One of the new publishers that emerged briefly in the late 1960s was Lightning Comics, which released 3 issues of Fatman the Human Flying Saucer by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, the writer and artist team responsible for many of the Golden Age Captain Marvel stories. Another was M. F. Enterprises which published 5 issues of a series also called Captain Marvel; this was a new character from Carl Burgos, Golden Age creator of the Human Torch, which bore no relation other than some in-joke allusions to the Golden Age Captain Marvel.

Most of these new series began in 1966 or 1967 and lasted no more than a year. Tower Comics, which published such characters as Dynamo, Noman and Undersea Agent, was longer lived; thier flagship title Thunder Agents debuted in late 1965 and lasted for 20 issues, ending in 1969.

According to John Strausbaugh of The New York Times, traditional comic book historians feel that although the Golden Age deserves study, the only noteworthy aspect of the Silver Age was the advent of underground comics. One commentator has suggested that underground comics are considered legitimate art because they were typically written and drawn by a single person; artists like Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton produced comics described as raw and instinctual. While most comics of the era were pure fantasy, underground comics targeted adults and reflected the counterculture movement of the time, being printed by ad-hoc publishers and distributed in head shops.

End

Various events have been identified as marking the end of the Silver Age. One suggestion has been the 1969 publication of the last 12 cent comics, while others have focused on the publishers that were its driving forces: Marvel and DC. According to Will Jacobs, the Silver Age ended in April 1970 when the man who had started it, Julius Schwartz, handed over Green Lantern to Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams in response to reduced sales. John Strausbaugh also connects the end of the Silver Age to Green Lantern. He observes that in 1960, the character embodied the can-do optimism of the era, declaring, "No one in the world suspects that at a moment's notice I can become mighty Green Lantern with my amazing power ring and invincible green beam! Golly, what a feeling it is!" However, by 1972 Green Lantern had become world weary; "Those days are gone gone forever the days I was confident, certain ... I was so young ... so sure I couldn't make a mistake! Young and cocky, that was Green Lantern. Well, I've changed. I'm older now ... maybe wiser, too ... and a lot less happy." Strausbaugh writes that the Silver Age "went out with that whimper." Comics scholar Arnold T. Blumberg places the end of the Silver Age in June 1973, when Spider-Man's girlfriend Gwen Stacy was killed in a story arc later dubbed "The Night Gwen Stacy Died", saying the era of "innocence" was ended by "the 'snap' heard round the comic book world the startling, sickening snap of bone that heralded the death of Gwen Stacy."

Aftermath

The Silver Age of comic books was followed by the Bronze Age. The demarcation is not clearly defined, but there are a number of possibilities. Scott, of Comic Book Resources, lists several commonly cited touchstones, including changes in personnel and the publication of particular individual issues. Among the latter are Conan #1 (1970) and Green Lantern/Green Arrow #76 (April 1970), "often cited as the first books of the Bronze Age." He also notes Jack Kirby's move from Marvel to DC in 1970, and Superman editor Mort Weisinger's retirement that same year. Another possible candidate is the return of horror comics, and the arrival of stories with self-consciously promoted social relevancy. Arnold T. Blumberg has argued that the shift was a gradual process that lasted from the late 1960s until 1973, ending with the death of Gwen Stacyn "event that many name as the single most memorable moving moment in collective fan recall". He writes that there was a willingness by creators and publishers to tackle more mature themes, even if they "were filtered through the somewhat simplistic lens of the superhero", thus bringing an end to "the light-hearted, carefree Silver Age".

According to historian Peter Sanderson, the "neo-silver movement" that began in 1986 with Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? by Alan Moore and Curt Swan, was a backlash against the Bronze Age with a return to Silver Age principles. In Sanderson's opinion, each comics generation rebels against the previous, and the movement was a response to Crisis on Infinite Earths, which itself was an attack on the Silver Age. Neo-silver comics creators made comics that recognized and assimilated the more sophisticated aspects of the Silver Age.

Legacy

The Silver Age marked a decline in the prominence of comics in genres such as horror, romance, teen and funny animal humor, or westerns, which were more popular than superhero adventures in the late 1940s through the mid-1950s, and fans of these genres see the Silver Age as a decline from that earlier era.

An important feature of the period was the evolution of the character makeup of superheroes. Young children and girls were targeted during the Silver Age by certain publishers; in particular, Harvey Comics attracted this group with titles such as Little Dot. Adult oriented underground comics also began during the Silver Age. There are several suggested endpoints for the Silver Age, including changes in the Green Lantern series and the death of Spider-Man's girlfriend in The Amazing Spider-Man #121 (June 1973).

Some critics and historians argue that one characteristic of the Silver Age was that science fiction and aliens replaced magic and gods. Others argue that magic was an important element of both Golden Age and Silver Age characters., and many Golden Age writers and artists were science-fiction fans or professional science-fiction writers who incorporated SF elements into their comic-book stories. Science was a common explanation for the origin of heroes in the Golden Age .

The Silver Age coincided with the rise of pop art, an artistic movement that used popular cultural artifacts, such as advertising and packaging, as source material for fine, or gallery-exhibited, art. Roy Lichtenstein, one of the best-known pop art painters, specifically chose individual panels from comic books and repainted the images, modifying them to some extent in the process but including in the painting word and thought balloons and captions as well as enlarged-to-scale color dots imitating the coloring process then used in newsprint comic books. An exhibition of comic strip art was held at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs of the Palais de Louvre in 1967, and books were soon published that contained serious discussions of the art of comics and the nature of the medium.

In January 1966, a live-action Batman television show debuted to high ratings. Like pop art, the show took comic-book tropes and reenvisioned them in the context of a different medium. Voiceover narration in each episode articulated the words of comic-book captions while fight scenes had sound effects like "Biff", "Bam" and "Pow" appear as visual effects on the screen, spelled out in large cartoon letters. Circulation for comic books in general and Batman merchandise in particular soared. Other masked or superpowered adventurers appeared on the television screen, so that "American TV in the winter of 1967 appeared to consist of little else but live-action and animated cartoon comic-book heroes, all in living colour." Existing comic-book publishers began creating superhero titles, as did new publishers. By the end of the 1960s, however, the fad had faded; in 1969, the best-selling comic book in the United States was no superhero series, but the teen-humor book Archie.

Arlen Schumer, author of The Silver Age of Comic Book Art, singles out Carmine Infantino's Flash as the embodiment of the design of the era: "as sleek and streamlined as the fins Detroit was sporting on all its models." Other notable artists of the era include Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane, Jack Kirby, Joe Kubert, and Curt Swan.

Two artists that changed the comics industry dramatically in the late 1960s were Neal Adams, considered one of the country's greatest draftsmen, and Jim Steranko. Adams' breakthrough was based on layout and rendering. Best known for returning Batman to his somber roots after the campy success of the Batman television show, his realistic depictions of anatomy, faces, and gestures changed comics' style in a way that Strausbaugh sees reflected in modern graphic novels.

One of the few writer-artists at the time, Steranko made use of a cinematic style of storytelling. Strausbaugh credits him as one of Marvel's strongest creative forces during the late 1960s, his art owing a large debt to Salvador Dal. Steranko started by inking and penciling the details of Kirby's artwork on Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. beginning in Strange Tales #151, but by Strange Tales #155 Stan Lee had put him in charge of both writing and drawing Fury's adventures. He exaggerated the James Bond-style spy stories, introducing the vortex beam (which lifts objects), the aphonic bomb (which explodes silently), a miniature electronic absorber (which protected Fury from electricity), and the Q-ray machine (a molecular disintegrator)ll in his first 11-page story.

Top 20 comics

As of 2008, the collecting of Silver Age comics was on the rise. Possible reasons are that certain Golden Age comics are becoming too expensive or that baby boomers fondly remember the comics from their youth. Amazing Fantasy #15, the first appearance of Spider-Man, is considered the "holy grail" of Silver Age comics. The Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #38 (2008) lists the following 20 comics as the most sought-after by collectors:

^ Apocryphal legend has it that in 1961, Timely and Atlas publisher Martin Goodman was playing golf with either Jack Liebowitz or Irwin Donenfeld of rival DC Comics (then known as National Periodical Publications), who bragged about DC's success with the Justice League, which had debuted in The Brave and the Bold #28 (February 1960) before going on to its own title.

Film producer and comics historian Michael Uslan later contradicted some specifics, while supporting the story's framework:

Irwin said he never played golf with Goodman, so the story is untrue. I heard this story more than a couple of times while sitting in the lunchroom at DC's 909 Third Avenue and 75 Rockefeller Plaza office as Sol Harrison and [production chief] Jack Adler were schmoozing with some of us ... who worked for DC during our college summers.... [T]he way I heard the story from Sol was that Goodman was playing with one of the heads of Independent News, not DC Comics (though DC owned Independent News). ... As the distributor of DC Comics, this man certainly knew all the sales figures and was in the best position to tell this tidbit to Goodman. ... Of course, Goodman would want to be playing golf with this fellow and be in his good graces. ... Sol worked closely with Independent News' top management over the decades and would have gotten this story straight from the horse's mouth.

Comic Stores are the Best Place for you to See the Latest Comic Books

The world of comic book collecting is not what it once was. Long gone are the days when your neighbor discovered his old cache of X Men comic books hidden in the attic and made thousands of dollars selling these rare treasures. Not that such things used to happen very often anyway.

Nowadays, with the internet and ebay and a rabid speculators involved, it's not worth collecting comics as some sort of investment or money-making scheme. The X Men Comic Books listed in the price guides never sell for the prices listed, not when buyers can shop around online.

Truly, the only reason to buy comic books at all is for the love of the comic books. If you are interested in X Men comic books, then buy X Men comics. Don't buy them based on some future hope of resale and profit. Buy them because you want to read them and you love them.

I started buying X Men comic books in the early 1990's, right when the New X Men series debuted. I snatched up as many copies of X Men #1 as I could, knowing as all the speculators out there did, that first issues always go up in value. Well, don't they? Of course they don't.

Today I could scarcely resell a copy of X Men #1 for its original face value, let alone for a profit. That's because comic book prices are a matter of supply and demand. First issues are valuable only when they are rare. When the supply is bigger than the demand, as the case is for some of my X Men comic books, then the value stays low.

But this isn't a problem for me. Why not? Because for the most part, I never bought my comic books as an investment. I bought them as a hobby. I've read every issue of X Men and Uncanny X Men I ever bought, and I've enjoyed them thoroughly.

From the Dark Phoenix storyline, through the Secret Wars and all the other great crossover sagas, to today, I still love X Men comic books for the characters, the stories and the art. As long as Jean Grey and Wolverine and Gambit and Rogue are having adventures, I will want to read about it.

The future of comics will be something entirely new. Fairly soon, paper comic books probably will become a thing of the past, as electronic media take over. We will be downloading our X Men comics onto mobile reading devices. The physical artifact of the comic book won't exist anymore.

Maybe then my old X Men combic books will be worth something. But I'm not worried about that right now. Right now, I'm going to re-read some of my favorite X Men issues and appreciate them for the great entertainment they really are.

Research shows that the main cause of downfall of the comic industry is the removal of comic books from shops and stores. But this cannot be the sole cause since comic books are now easily available on the internet, in movies and animations.

Another question that comes to mind is why Japanese animation or "manga" is doing better then traditional comic books? The answer is simple. The Japanese write a better story line and their animated movies are made for a wider audience. Often, Japanese comic books are framed as graphic novels containing 70 to 220 pages for a mature audience. The manga holds a more important place in Japanese culture, and is both well respected as an art form and also as a form of popular literature. On the other hand, comic books in Western countries are generally geared towards young teenagers rather than adults. This approach has made it tough for the Western comic industry to attain its dominant position.

Common misconceptions regarding comic books turning readers into out-of-touch delinquents have also hurt sale. Many parents fear that comics will brainwash children into believing that supermans and batmans actually exist in the world. For this reason, many parents forbid their children from reading comic books as in their view they carry no ethical or moral values. These attitudes have contributed to the lack of interest in comics as well as its drop in publication.

Comic Books – Exploring your Imagination

Comic books are a firm staple of many people. With these comics people can follow the exploits of their favorite series without having to worry about missing any action. There are many different comic book types that are well known but many of us like getting comic book action from comics like Marvel comic books.

The various charters that are depicted in these comics are ones that many of us have grown up with. Just as we are familiar with Superman we know the adventures of Spiderman, the Hulk, and the Scarlet Witch. We also recognize their many villains like the Green Goblin, Magneto, Mr. Sinister and many other villains and superheroes.

Marvel comics are very well known and today some of these action comics have been transformed into full length movies like that of the X-Men Movies, Spiderman and even the DareDevil. These movies and the crowds of people who come to see them just reaffirm that Marvel comic books have a way of reaching into various aspects of our lives.

Since many people both young and old love reading the various adventures of their favorite action characters sometimes these Marvel comic books take their cartoon characters and change them slightly to reflect the various moods and feelings that are currently around.

The next time that you decide to buy some of your comic book choices and you see some Marvel comic books you may want to see if you can find ones from a few years ago as well as the more current ones.

You will probably be surprised to see that not only does the artwork of the comic books look different but the action series itself may have some interesting storylines and other new characters making their appearance. These changes are mainly due to the fact that even Marvel comic books need to keep up with the times.

For this reason you will see that these different comic books are constantly looking different but they generally try to follow the original story lines. Without seeing the various exploits of Marvel super heroes and heroines like the Scarlet Witch, Jean Grey from the X-Men and Spider Man you will probably feel let down.

As a result all of the Marvel Comic books feature their well known characters in the original storyline and sometimes they are in adventures in different series. This way you get double the pleasure.
