What is appealing about American comics (Superman, etc)?
I've always thought that manga is so much better... I wonder if I'm just un-american... why do people like that stuff? People like that are so close to liking manga just so far away... if you're going to like comics why not like manga? Obviously people disagree, I just wonder what goes through their minds.
I've been reading comics and pulps since the sixties (even though most pulps stopped publishing around when I was born in 1955. Superman etc means different things to me and you and I'm not sure you can appreciate the richness of comics before the big comic book companies discovered how to ride the superhero boom to artistic oblivion. We had Little Lulu and Richie Rich from Harvey, Archie from the Archie Comics group, various "suspense" and horror comics we were afraid to let our parents see and of course there were always the romance books. Dell/Western/Gold Key comics did Tarzan, the Disney Characters and many many classic books from TV series. Their Maverick had some of the best pictures of James Garner ever. Seen in the rich context of the old days, even today you can see the pulp heritage of the Shadow and Doc Savage and Hawk Carse in X-men and the Avengers. And I will sometimes glance at them. But I'm more likely to read a comic from the Silver age these days -- or even before.
I LIKE Conan the Barbarian and the Shadow and Doc Savage. Hawk Carse is definitely bearable. But Howl's Moving Castle is based on a Childrens' novel by Diana Wynn Jones, who is something of a family favorite novelist. We all adore her. And can you imagine an American adaptation as good as Miyazaki's? I can't.
