Portrush is a seaside resort town and its name means promontory port. It is in Northern Ireland in Count Antrim. The main part of this town is on a mile long peninsula and contains restaurants, bars, hotel sand the railway station.
It mainly serves as a dormitory town for the nearby University of Ulster. There are many different accommodation choices including camping, caravans, cottages, self catering apartments, family guesthouses, luxury hotels and more.
Portrush is known for its three beautiful beaches, White Rocks, East Strand and West Strand. There is extensive lovely coastline to visit and at one time it was possible to visit all of the beaches on the Giants Causeway tramway. Today the tramway does not travel its full length but only a small section.
Some of the attractions include the Royal Portrush Golf club that is considered one of the world's greatest courses. This course is considered very challenging as it is rough greens with unpredictable weather. Some of the most famous shots are the Dunluce Links par four and the par 3 Calamity Corner.
The Coastal Zone is part of the Portrush Nature reserve and contains changing exhibits during the year. It focuses on showing how the marine environment has influenced the history of Portrush as well as the present and future of the community. You can visit the rock pools at low tide and walk the rocky seashore.
Dunluce castle is situated on a crag on the Antrim coast. This spectacular spot was sculpted by the sea. You can visit the castle ruins as it has not been inhabited sine the British besieged it during the 16th century. A popular spot for families is the Barrys. This is the largest amusement park found in Ireland. There are a variety of rides available both for those looking for a thrill or others who just want to relax.
