Our Army War 3 Our Army War

A failed farmer, businessman and collector Bill. A president sharply criticized as a supporter of corruption. Ulysses S. Grant was not an astute businessman, or even a president inspired, however, as a soldier, he has been a success. Leadership Grant from the U.S. Army during the Civil War made him one of the most famous generals and respected that the U.S. has ever produced. It was a resounding success, one that few would have predicted.

Born in Ohio in 1822, Hiram Ulysses Grant call for a Congress United States, Thomas L. Hamer, for admission to West Point, at the age of 17. Hamer has unwittingly Hiram Ulysses Grant on his behalf would become famous for - apparently confused about the full name of the Grant for Young, Hamer has designated as "Ulysses S. Grant, "short for S. Simpson, Grant mother's maiden name.

Although a soldier by profession, I never felt any kind of taste for war, and I have never advocated, except as a means of peace. Ulysses S. Grant

A student is not exceptional, Grant graduated West Point in 1843, 21 in a class of 39. Although he was a renowned horseman, who had seemed a natural choice for the cavalry, Grant was appointed quartermaster regiment instead of in the U.S. Army. He served as quartermaster in the Mexican-American War, and was brevetted twice for bravery during the war.

After the war ended in 1848, Grant remained with the army, stationed at various points West. He was appointed captain in 1854, when he abruptly resigned from the army. A heavy drinker throughout his life, rumor that he was found drunk on duty and the choice of resignation or a court martial Grant hunted for years after.

The Civilian life did not agree with Grant, he failed several initiatives until moving to his father in Illinois leather goods store in 1860. For Grant, secession and civil war that followed could not have come at a better time. When Lincoln called for volunteers after the attack on Fort Sumter, Grant wasted no time recruiting a company and accepting an offer by the Governor of Illinois forming volunteer regiments.

The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy. Get it as soon as you can. Hitting as hard as you can and keep moving on Ulysses S. Grant.

Grant spent the first year of the war in Missouri, and it was not until he captured two Confederate positions Tennessee, Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, the first two major victories of the Union the war that Grant distinguished himself. Acceptance "of terms rather than the exception unconditional and immediate surrender" Grant took over 12,000 prisoners Confederate promotion to major general of President Lincoln and become a national hero in the process.

However, Glory Grant was found not without drawbacks, its commanding general, Henry W. Halleck, challenged both with problem drinking deemed Grant and his visit with Halleck's rival, Don Carlos Buell, and attempted to relieve the subsidies of the order of what was then known as the Western Army Tennessee. Speech by Lincoln prevented the dismissal of Grant. Problems with Halleck was so painful to give what he considered resigning Army.

Halleck quickly gained a position in Washington, leaving Grant as Major General of what is now known as the Army Tennessee. Grant in 1863 Vicksburg Campaign would leave no doubt that the replacement of Halleck is accomplished Halleck himself famous in the annals of history Military Strategy Grant to take this important Confederate city was also a bold and unprecedented flexibility. Grant took his troops enemy territory, without the use of feeders to use, and soon destroyed the rail link between Vicksburg in the rest of the country. Near the troops of Confederate General Pemberton, who now had no supply line themselves forced Grant Pemberton - And the southwestern part of the Confederation - to submit. This achievement, which coincided with the Union victory at Gettysburg, cripple the Confederacy.

In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins. Ulysses S. Grant

It was in Chattanooga, and a spectacular victory of the Union orchestrated by Grant. Lincoln subsidy granted to control any Army of the United States, and Grant repay in kind with a strategy which not only won the war, but Lincoln won Re-election.

As commander in chief, Grant moved his headquarters to Virginia, where he initiated the plan coordinated attack against the Confederacy. Grant, with George Meade and Benjamin Butler, would go against General Robert E. Lee and the great army of Northern Virginia, while Franz Sigel would Valley Shenandoah, Sherman would take Georgia, while the remaining seats would be on railways in West Virginia and the city of Mobile. Grant's plan was novel, it was the first general to undertake a unified attack in so many different regions, and the first to propose a total war in which civilians and towns were attacked and armies.

While Sherman, Sigel and others sowed destruction across the South, Grant dug in battle ag
