Do you have a Mr.Or a Ms,"Collector" in YOUR neighborhood?

I think and also believe that there is more than likely at least one of these types of people living in one house on one block of most neighborhoods! I had one in my old neighborhood...the fellow was a terrific hoarder..the neighbors watched out for one another..and they would always call the fire department on this man(who was a professor at a local university) Mr,Collector would collect newspapers stacked high up to the ceilings! among other things..but, the papers were pretty dangerous!

then there was another neighborhood, of an ex-boyfriends', there was a "anything type" of hoarder...collecting planting pots,and string,and sticks and lots of other things, that I really didn't know about!

So, what about you all, anybody in your neighborhood with these tendencies and what do you do, or have you done regarding these persons?
if anything? andy why or why not?

I'm a debt collector. Not a popular career choice, I know, but that is because people don't understand exactly what it is I do. Maybe in the 80's, my predecessors were the big, mean, muscle-heads with shaven hair and tattoo's up to their eyeballs, but creditors have since learned that there is a better way all round for them to get their money back.

The biggest misunderstanding we face is when we have to be honest with people about where their account is heading. If someone has borrowed £10,000, and doesn't repay it, the bailiffs may eventually come knocking. That's reality. If that we're me, I'd rather be told this when I could do something to prevent it. Unfortunately, many people interpret this information as a 'threat' ('you're going to send the boys after me!!') as opposed to an opportunity.

In my articles, I'm going to show you how the debt collection process works – what we do, how we negotiate, so you know how to deal with us, and I'm going to do it in plain straight forward language.

It's not difficult – most people I go through are surprised how easy it is, and this is the exact same process expensive 'Debt Management Companies' employ. Why am I writing this? Believe me, as a collector, I'd much rather be harassing 'dodgy debtors' who have tried to get away with free money, than be chasing you. It's better for everybody if we can work together to get those pesky collectors off your backs!

So, how to deal with debt collectors? Our jobs are to assess people's situation and come up with a fair arrangement for repaying the account. Debt collectors will accept anything – so long as it is a fair offer. Obviously not every offer we get is fair. How do you demonstrate your position to a collector?

a) Be calm. We know being in debt is a stressful experience; however aggression is not going to get the matter sorted. You can't negotiate with a collector who has hung up the phone.

b) Sort out your circumstances before you begin to negotiate. Figure out how much you need to spend to survive – Food, rent, electric, gas, tax and all the other necessary day to day expenses. No-one expects you to sit in your home in the middle of winter with the heating off.

c) Figure out how much you've got free, and how much you can offer each creditor. Certain debts have priority – council tax, energy bills and so forth.

d) Send all your figures, along with an offer of payment by post. Debt collectors will try to negotiate – this is their job. (Some people do exaggerate the figures somewhat).

That is pretty much it! Those four steps are all that debt management programs do. And remember, if it all gets too much, Citizens Advice can handle it for you. Once an arrangement is in place, stick to it, and remember to proactively contact the collectors if you circumstances change – Work with them and they'll work with you. Just please stop shouting at us...
