What do you think of the name Lois?

Yes, yes, yes. I know it peaked in the 20's. And I know most of the Loises you know are probably very old. But try to think about just the name itself. Isn't it pretty?

The best-known Lois is, of course, Lois Lane -- Superman's girlfriend. There is also a Lois in the Bible, though. All we know about her is that she had faith in God and inspired her daughter and grandson toward the same. Her grandson grew up to become the young preacher Timothy who was mentored by the Apostle Paul.

I love the sound of the name. It's so sultry. While most S-enders for girls sound dated, Carys and Iris are fashionable. And Lola is "in" right now.

So why not Lois? What do you think? Does it seem ready for revival?

And the S ending is very charming.

The "issues" that Lois has are, I think, based on the fact that the name sounds "mature". I don't mean an "old lady" name - Ruby and Ivy are "old lady" names, but they are in again, and do sound quite child-like and cutesy. Lois just sounds like a grown up. The similar-sounding but unrelated Louisa does too, but in that case you can use Louise or Louie or Lulu as a nickname during childhood - I'm not sure what the nickname for Lois would be. Lo? Lolo? Lowie?

The other thing is that the name has been used a fair bit in popular culture - not only Lois Lane, but the mother is called Lois in both "Family Guy" and "Malcolm in the Middle". That probably influences people's perceptions too.

I think it could definitely be used today, but parents might encounter a bit of resistance from others.
