the devil was defineately a high ranking angel, but when asked by God to bow down to Adam (pbuh) he refused as he didnt understand how an angel could be asked to bow down to a lowly human who isnt perfect and sins and makes mistakes.Was this a test? Sure, everything in life we do is a test but satan wanted to prove to God that His creation wasnt perfect and had the ablility to sin and so he asked God if he could have the pleasure as he sees it to whisper in our hearts and minds when we have choices to make, one being good, the other bad. It is our strength and faith in God that helps us through these times and guides us to the straight path.
