How to go about losing thirty pounds is an elusive question for many people, but you can figure out how to do it without a lot of mental anguish and physical agony. Most people gain weight fairly slowly over a long period of time and then realize one day that they are suddenly far fatter than they ever dreamed they would be. Then, they panic and decide to lose all their extra weight by this time next Tuesday.

Anybody who has gone through this knows that it is just not possible to lose a lot of weight quickly and keep it off permanently. The key to losing weight is to do so slowly, using a consistent and disciplined approach over a period of a few weeks, or even a few years, depending on your total weight loss goal. If you have gained twenty or thirty pounds of middle age spread over the past thirty years, you should not expect to lose it all within just a few weeks.

For healthy weight loss, you should set a target of losing only a pound or two per week. If you lose weight any faster than this, you will be setting yourself up for defeat before you really get started. The hunger pangs and cravings that come from trying to lose weight too quickly are almost impossible to overcome by will power alone. It is far better to set a reasonable goal of a pound per week, or even a pound per month. After all, if you want to lose the thirty pounds that you have taken thirty years to gain, losing only one pound per week will get you to your goal in far less than one year!

So, how DO you go about losing twenty or thirty pounds? To lose weight, you need to combine sensible eating with the right mental attitude and a healthy exercise program. If you are a typical couch potato, it would do you good in far more ways than just losing weight to get up and move for a half hour every day. Your exercise can be like your weight loss program -- slow and gentle. You will never be able lose all of your excess weight by exercise alone, but exercise conditions your body and mind to eat better and to use what you eat more effectively. In addition to weight loss, regular exercise will also improve your overall health, mental acuity, and good feelings about yourself, all of which will help you eat a better diet.

In order to lose one pound of fat, you have to consume 3500 calories (kilocalories, actually, but let's just call them "calories" because that is what everybody else calls them) less in food than your body burns. So, if you want to lose thirty pounds in, say, eight months, you will need to cut your calories by (3500X30=105,000) one hundred five thousand calories during that time, or about 3,000 calories per week. This may seem like a lot, but it really isn't all that much.

Consider, for example, that a typical twelve ounce sweetened soft drink contains about 160 calories. If you normally drink a soft drink at lunch, another one with your afternoon snack, and a third one with dinner, all you have to do to cut your calories by 3000 in a week is to substitute water with a wedge of lemon for most of those soft drinks. You can actually still treat yourself to two soft drinks per week and still hit your 3000 calorie goal.

Eliminating soft drinks is only one easy way to cut calories. Find a good source of nutrition and weight loss information, either by doing your own research or buying an inexpensive downloadable guide to your own weight loss plan on the internet, and you can quickly put together an effective personalized plan for losing your excess weight. The key, though, is to take action! Get started right now and a year from now you will be amazed at how much better you look and feel.
